Sargent Beach Breakwater and Jetty project update -

So I sent notes out to the main contractor for the breakwater and jetty project, Kent Pollard, Judge McDonald and the GLO – only heard back from the main contractor (shocker).  The question was, are we are on track with the project?

The answer - Yes, we re still on track. Our permit is in the decision document stage and FWS is working to finalize the Biological Opinion.  Final engineering is progressing nicely, and should be complete by Nov. as planned.

The County will be working with the GLO to initiate the next phase which would be construction of the breakwaters once we have the permits and the final engineering complete. Construction should fall within about a 6 month window. (with a bit of wiggle either way).

Beach nourishment follows breakwater constructions as a separate construction project. Remember that beach nourishment will go all the way up the beach from Mitchells Cut to a mile past the last house on the east end of the island.

Everyone (County, GLO, USACE, and stakeholders like yourself)  have been working hard to keep the momentum moving forward and staying on track. We are so very pleased to be a part of this extortionary effort!!

So nothing really new there – which in this case is good. Remember that they will be able to see the impacts of the new breakwater and jetty on beach erosion fairly quickly and then we need to push on getting the funding for breakwaters all the way up the beach!

SO IF YOU MEET SOMEONE RUNNING FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER – MAKE DAMN SURE THEY COMMIT TO THIS PROJECT AND THE FLOODING.

UPDATE on the Opening of the Mouth of the San Bernard which will help provide sand to our beach naturally - Jul 26 - RIGID Constructors of Lafayette, La dredging equipment arrived on site to start to widen and deepen the river channel to the Gulf.  Remember they have funding to keep it open for the next 20 years.

Nothing new on the Texas Gulflink – the oil pumping station proposal that will go into the Gulf near Freeport – that could pump 85 million barrels a day through there into super tankers .  If that breaks, our beach is toast.
