The Army Corps has approved the lease to allow Sargent Breakwater and Jetty to move forward
On the Matagorda County Commissioner agenda was to approve and authorize the signing of the lease on the area which will allow the Sargent Beach breakwater and jetty project to move forward. A huge win and the county attorney saw no issues with the lease.
According to Mike Estlinbaum, the Army Corps has the money wired to proceed with the project and is supposed to release the new request of proposal at the end of June 2025 - hopefully this bid package is better and will get solid companies bidding so it can be awarded in August and proceed in the fall.
A long time coming - hopefully it is actually moving forward.
Just want to add that there is a considerable amount of sand available at other end of Sargent beach too, and hopefully the mouth of the San Bernard (now closed) will be dredged also and the sand placed on Sargent Beach. Although that is mainly a concern for Brazoria County, there is an old cemetery there where a lot of heroes from the Texas Revolution are buried -- some from the Alamo -- and the caskets are now washing out to sea! Not good.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct - the sand on our beach moves east to west so that when they put the jetty in - it will stop the sand going down that way. As a part of our project, they are dredging the mouth of the San Bernard and will take that sand and bring it our way. All good things - if they just get the contract awarded.
